CPSC issues recall of several potentially hazardous bicycle models
May 20th, 2009 by Kurt Niland
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a recall of three bicycle brands containing potentially faulty components. The recall includes approximately 3,600 Norco bicycles manufactured by Norco Performance Bikes of British Columbia, Canada; about 16,000 Trek bicycle models made by Trek Bicycle Corp. of Waterloo, Wisconsin; and approximately 1,500 Cannondale bicycles made by Cannondale Bicycle Corp. of Bethel, Connecticut.
The Norco bikes have frames that can break and separate, seriously compromising the safety of riders in motion. The manufacturer received one report of a rider who was thrown from the bike, sustaining a fractured collar bone in the fall.
Bikes included in the Norco recall have the following model year and names: 2007 Team DH, 2008 Team DH, 2008 Aline Park, 2008 Aline Park Atomik, 2008 Shore 1,2,3, and 2009 Atomik (without gussets). Model names are printed on a decal on the top tube of the bike frame. Various retailers nationwide sold the recalled bikes from September 2006 through February 2009.
Trek Bicycles included in the Recall contain faulty suspension forks manufactured by JD Components of Taiwan. The JD bike forks can lose alignment and make the front wheel turn unexpectedly. Although no injuries have been reported, the CPSC is aware of four reports of Trek bikes with the defective forks becoming suddenly misaligned. Riders can lose control of their bikes and crash if their bikes’ suspension forks cause the front wheel to shift suddenly.
Approximately 16,000 Trek bicycles contain JD suspension forks. The recall includes 2009 bikes with the model names Trek 7300, Trek 7300 WSD, and Trek 7500 bikes. The suspension forks have the words “Bontrager SPA” printed on them. Trek bicycle dealers sold the recalled bikes from August 2008 to April 2009.
The Cannondale bikes included in the recall also contain the same faulty JD suspension forks. Altogether, about 1,500 of Cannondale’s 2008 Adventure 2, Adventure 3, Adventure 2 Feminine, and Adventure 2 Feminine models are being recalled. The model name is printed on the bike’s frame. Suspension forks on these models have the words “Cannondale AT35 Adventure Trail” printed on them. Bikes with forks containing the name “Rock Shox” are not included in the recall.
The CPSC advises anyone who owns one of the recalled bikes to stop using it immediately and contact the manufacturer or dealer for repair or replacement information.
