Investigators still baffled over cookie dough contamination

e coli bacteria 100x100Food safety authorities and microbiologists arrived at Nestle’s Danville, Virginia plant to investigate the likely presence of E. coli bacteria in refrigerated cookie dough products. The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have been baffled by the bacteria’s presence in the cookie dough because it is a type of food unlikely to contain E. coli.

New federal agency would protect consumers against bad business

In his weekly radio address, Barack Obama defended his proposed Consumer Financial Protection Agency, saying that the new government office is needed to crack down on the types of business practices that led to the economic crisis.

Nestle cookie dough products recalled after E. coli outbreak

cookie dough 100x100The Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are investigating reports of E. coli illness caused by consumption of Nestle’s Toll House refrigerated cookie dough products. Nestle’s U.S. operations announced today that it was voluntarily recalling the Toll House products.

years after accident, TBI victim suffers but hasn’t lost her spirit

abstractbrain 100x100On July 10, 2002, Susan Riddle was driving with her family when a drunk driver’s SUV landed on her windshield. Riddle’s husband and son emerged from the vehicle unharmed, but Susan was not as fortunate. Kent Riddle had to perform CPR on his wife as he waited for help to arrive. Having sustained a serious traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the crash, Susan would spend weeks in a coma, months in a hospital, and years in rehabilitation. Her fascinating story was told in BE Healthy magazine.

FDA reviews possible link between ADHD meds, sudden cardiac death

adhd drugs pharmaceutical 100x100The Food and Drug Administration () has issued a Safety Communication about an ongoing review of stimulant medication used in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) because of reports of sudden cardiac death in healthy children. The events are part of a study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry. Because of the study’s limitations, the urges parents not to stop a child’s stimulant medication based on the study and to discuss concerns about the use of these medications with the health care professional who prescribed the medications.

Six deaths prompt CPSC to re-announce robe recall

blair robe 100x100The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Blair LLC, a clothing designer and manufacturer based in Warren, Penn., have announced a voluntary of 162,000 women’s chenille robes. Blair received reports that six people died after their robes caught on fire. According to the CPSC, five of the six victims were female and had been using their stoves when the incidents occurred. Three of the victims were in their 80s.

FDA warns of contaminated skin sanitizers, protectants
