CPSC announces recall of three 'Bonavita' crib models
June 12th, 2009 by Kurt Niland
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of 3 “Bonavita” crib models manufactured by Cranbury, N.J., based LaJobi Industries, a company that manufactures and distributes high-end juvenile furniture.
LaJobi recalled about 2,000 “Cabana” Drop Side Cribs after numerous customers reported defects. The wooden slats on the crib can detach or break, creating a gap that creates a potential entrapment and strangulation hazard for infants and toddlers. LaJobi received 6 reports of crib slats breaking on this particular model and 10 reports of the rails falling out altogether. No injuries have been attributed to the defects.
The Cabana cribs were manufacturer in Vietnam between January 2006 and October 2008 and are marked with production dates ranging from 01 JAN 2006 to 31 OCT 2008. The production date, along with the model name, color, product order number, and other production information can be found on a label located on the inside bottom rail of the headboard or footboard. Cribs with other production dates are not defective and are not included in the recall.
Cabana cribs were sold in 3 finishes and were available at baby product specialty stores nationwide from January 2006 through May 2009. The cribs generally retailed for $450.
Other Bonavita brand cribs recalled included 2,900 “Babi Italia Pinehurst” cribs and “Hudson” drop side cribs, both of which have the potential to cause entrapment or suffocation.
LaJobi and the CPSC received 33 reports of the drop sides becoming detached because of a spring mechanism failure. The lower spring pins on the footboard and headboard can fail, creating an extremely hazardous gap between the drop side and the crib mattress. Two incident reports involved children becoming trapped, while one involved a child falling from the crib. All of the children survived without serious injury.
The defective Italia and Hudson cribs were made in China and are stamped with production dates between December 2006 and August 2007. Production information, including the production date, can be found a label affixed to the headboard or footboard. The cribs sold in several baby specialty stores for about $300 between December 2006 and December 2007.
The CPSC “urges parents and caregivers to immediately stop using the recalled cribs and find an alternative, safe sleeping environment for their baby.”
Consumers in possession of a defective crib should contact LaJobi as soon as possible. The company will schedule free in-home repairs by professional technicians.
