The Consumer Product Safety Commission and Sevca LLC announced a recall of Sevylor brand inflatable Tow Behinds today. According to the CPSC’s announcement, the plastic hitch that connects the inflatable float to the boat, which Sevca calls the “Quick Hitch,” can break and project fragments back toward the person or persons riding the Tow Behind. Serious injuries may result if the hitches break.

The CPSC said the manufacturer received one report of a passenger being struck by a piece of the Quick Hitch attached to the towrope. The agency did not provide information on the extent of the injuries received in that incident.

The inflatable tubes are manufactured by Shanghai Suofeng Plastic Metal Manufacturers Co., Ltd. for Sevca, LLC of Wichita Kansas. About 94,000 units manufactured between 2005 and 2009 are involved in the recall. The units cost between $50 and $240 and were sold in retail and department stores nationwide from January 2005 through December 2009.

The CPSC recommends that consumers stop using any of the recalled Tow Behinds immediately, unless otherwise instructed. Owners of one of the recalled models should contact Sevca to receive instructions on how to remove the Quick Hitch and use their Tow Behind without the hitch. The company will exchange returned Quick Hitches with a tow rope.
