Toyota Motor Corp. announces massive recall

toyota logoToyota Motor Corp. announced it would recall 3.8 million vehicles in the U.S. in response to reports of sudden and unexpected acceleration in several car and truck models. Toyota and the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) believe that removable floor mats are responsible for the runaway acceleration. The mats can shift and interfere with the gas pedal, causing the vehicle to race forward.

FDA cautions about adverse events, deaths associated with anemia drug

Exjade 100x100The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is notifying hemotology-oncology providers of an ongoing review of issues with Exjade (deferasirox), an oral medication used to treat patients aged 2 and older with chronic anemia and iron overload as a result of receiving blood transfusions. According to the early communication, new data suggests there may be a greater number of adverse events and deaths in patients using Exjade who are older than 60 years of age and who have myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a potentially fatal condition that can require frequent blood transmissions.

Tamiflu dispensers cause dosage confusion and errors

tamiflu 100x100The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a public health alert Thursday after finding errors with the measurements on the dosing dispenser included in Tamiflu packaging. Tamiflu is the brand name of Oseltamivir, an antiviral prescription drug used to treat people infected with the influenza virus. Produced by Swiss global health care company F. Hoffman-La Roche Ltd., Tamiflu has been used extensively throughout the world during the last decade to help curb the spread of the flu virus within patients.

Infusion pump catheters recalled due to risk of serious injury, death

intrathecal catheter 8709SC1 88x100A catheter that connects to infusion pumps used to store and deliver medicine into the body is being recalled because its design is incompatible with certain pumps and may cause serious or due to catheter disconnection or blockage at the connection site.

The Class I recall was announced this week by the Food and Drug Association (FDA) and covers INDURA 1P Intrathecal Catheter model 8709SC, Intrathecal Catheter, model 8731SC; Sutureless Pump Connector Revision Kit, model 8578; and Intrathecal Catheter Pump Segment Revision Kit, model 8596SC. A Class I recall is the most serious type of recall the FDA can give and involves situations in which there is a reasonable probability that use of the products will cause serious or .

Steering clear of potentially contaminated food

leafy greensThe U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced another massive recall of fresh produce last week, this time for 1,715 cartons of bunched spinach that tested positive for salmonella bacteria in a random test conducted by the USDA. Alarmed by the frequency of foods recalled over bacterial contamination fears, many consumer advocacy groups and legislators have indicted the federal government’s food inspection system, calling for an overhaul of the FDA and USDA systems currently in place. But in an age of mass production and processing that makes cross contamination ever more likely, it’s wise for the consumer to take certain measures to mitigate the risk of becoming sick from tainted food.

Judge upholds verdict favoring families hurt by massive gas leak

tanker fuelingA Circuit Court Judge in Maryland has upheld the verdict of a jury that awarded $150 million to the residents of a Baltimore County community living in proximity to a service station owned by Exxon Mobil Corp. In 2006, an underground pipe at the station leaked 26,000 gallons of gasoline, the equivalent of four tankers full, into the surrounding land. The leak occurred over a five week period and resulted in massive environmental damage.

CPSC urges parents to prevent child injury and death

Too often, however, heavy pieces of furniture, appliances, television sets, and other heavy objects tumble down onto young ones, causing serious and in some cases . Rape victim jumps arbitration hurdle, reclaims right to trial

jamie 100x100One would think that a woman who is gang raped by seven coworkers, then locked in a shipping container for more than 24 hours without food, water or even a bed, would be able to find justice. After all, this is the United States. We have justice written into our constitution, our pledge of allegiance, and the very fabric of society. But for Jamie Leigh Jones, a 21-year-old Halliburton computer technician working in Iraq, obtaining justice against those fellow Halliburton employees who brutalized her has been a long, complicated and arduous battle. For years, Jones has been seeking compensation against her former employer for the way it handled the rape – by sticking her in a shipping container and threatening to fire her if she sought medical treatment outside of Iraq. Because of her employment contract with Halliburton, however, Jones has almost no legal recourse.
