March is brain injury awareness month, concussions take spotlight

concussion 100x100March is Brain Awareness Month, and this year the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) is calling attention to concussions, which are often overlooked, ignored, or not taken seriously. To help boost awareness of concussions and the threats they pose, especially to children and adolescents, the BIAA is launching a year-long education and advocacy campaign called under the banner “A concussion is a brain . Get the facts.”

Illinois mom says negligence led to her son’s brain injuries

The risk of becoming injured is why athletes – whether they’re professional baseball players or high school football players – don protective gear. Nothing, of course, completely eliminates the risk of , but wearing protective gear greatly diminishes it.

Traumatic brain injury: Jason’s story part one

jason for web 100x100Carol Stanley’s life took an unexpected turn one day in January of 2007 when her son Jason, a student at Auburn University, was physically assaulted by three other men. The attack left Jason with a traumatic brain injury (TBI) that might have eluded medical staff if it weren’t for his worsening symptoms and his mother’s persistence in finding the right care for her son. The life-altering incident set Jason on a path to recovery and led Carol on an often frustrating crusade for better laws – laws that are more favorable to victims and less protective of those who commit the crimes. We will tell their story in segments over the next few days.

Returning troops bring attention to traumatic brain injuries

army helmet 150x150The Brain Association of America recognizes March as Brain Awareness Month, and Wednesday the Pentagon held a press conference that underscored the need for the public to know more about brain injuries, their causes, and their treatment. According to Pentagon officials, between 10 and 20 percent of American troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan have sustained some degree of traumatic brain injury (TBI). The figure could be as low as 180,000 but as high as 360,000, Pentagon officials said.

Concussions are a common sports , yet few people are aware of how devastating even minor concussions can be on the brain’s function.
