CPSC hits Mattel with record civil penalty

barbie dog 100x100The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission announced that it has hit Mattel, Inc. and its wholly owned subsidiary Fischer-Price with the third largest civil penalty in CPSC history for importing and selling toys containing illegal amounts of lead. The toy manufacturers agreed to pay the $2.3 million penalty, which was the highest of its kind for violations involving the importation or distribution of a regulated product.

Birmingham hospital leads Alabama in pediatric brain injury care

FDA issues serious risk warning with hyperthyroidism drug

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning to endocrine health care professionals, pharmacists and pediatricians about the risk of serious liver , including liver failure and death, with the use of propylthiouracil (PTU) in adult and pediatric patients. PTU is a drug used to treat hyperthyroidism, including Graves disease, by decreasing the amount of thyroid hormone produced by the thyroid gland. Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland is overactive and produces excess thyroid hormones.

CPSC continues investigation of Chinese drywall

chinese drywall 100x100The June edition of the U.S. Consumer Product Commission’s Safety Review says that the agency has received more than 265 reports from residents in 18 states and Washington D.C. from customers who believe their health and / or their homes have been negatively affected by toxic drywall imported from China. Most of the homes that contain the suspect drywall were built in 2006 and 2007 during an unprecedented construction rush. At that time, contractors and suppliers looked to China for a supply of fresh drywall, which began running scarce after the 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons.

FDA issues recall of face paints due to adverse reactions

face paint 100x100The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a on Fun Express, Inc. brand water-based face paints due to adverse event reports of skin reactions in children exposed to various colors of the face paint. The “Face Paint” was labeled and distributed by Oriental Trading Co., and all exposures happened at the same day and at the same organized event. Adverse events reports included rashes, itchiness, burning sensation and swelling where the face paints were applied. Significant microbial contamination was indicated in most of the products tested by an FDA laboratory.

The paints are designed to be used on the face or body area using fingertips or brushes to make a desired design. The includes blue, purple, red, orange, black and green face paints. The FDA advises consumers to stop the use of these products and discard them or return them to the retailer.

Investigators focus on pilot competency in Buffalo plane crash

colgan air crash 100x100Serious questions have arisen about the competency and training of the pilot who was in charge of flying the Colgan Air commuter plane when it crashed last February in Buffalo, New York. The crash claimed the lives of all 49 people aboard and one person on the ground. Investigators will announce their findings tomorrow in the case.
