American toy maker settles lead paint violations for $1.5 million

train 100x100The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced yesterday that RC2 Corp. of Oak Brook, Illinois has agreed to pay a $1.25 million civic penalty for importing toys to the United States that violated the federal lead paint ban. RC2 is the importer and seller of Thomas & Friends ™ Wooden Railway toys.

New rule requires registration system for many child products

Consumer watchdog announces 10 Worst Toys List

george 100x100Just in time for the holiday season, W.A.T.C.H. (World Against Toys Causing Harm), a Massachusetts-based consumer watchdog organization, announced its annual “10 Worst Toys” list at a conference in Boston’s Franciscan Hospital for Children. According to the organization’s website, “Founder Edward M. Swartz and W.A.T.C.H. have fearlessly exposed potentially dangerous toys to the general public. As a result, children’s lives have been saved.”

CPSC issues another child drowning advisory

bath 100x100In June, as swimming pools opened for the summer across the country, the Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a advisory to the public in an effort to raise awareness about child drowning and the ways to prevent swimming related deaths and injuries. Now, as pools close for the fall and winter, a new CPSC advisory seeks to keep children safe in bathtubs and child bathing equipment. “After pools, more children drown in bathtubs than in any other product in and around the home,” the advisory says.

CPSC urges parents to prevent child injury and death

Too often, however, heavy pieces of furniture, appliances, television sets, and other heavy objects tumble down onto young ones, causing serious injury and in some cases death. To help lessen the number of household accidents, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a statement yesterday urging parents to safeguard their homes against these potential tragedies.

new CPSC chairman is a devoted child and public safety advocate

ineztenenbaum2 98x100The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission announced that it has sworn in its new Chairman, Inez Tenebaum, an and child advocate who recently completed two terms as South Carolina’s State Superintendent of Education. Ms. Tenenbaum was nominated by President Obama on June 9 and confirmed by the Senate on June 19. Her term will expire in October 2013.
