Consumer Reports’ 12 most dangerous supplements explained

nw bitter orange extract 100x100Americans take dietary supplements to help them lose weight, be more aware, and for general well being, but according to a recent Consumer Reports story, those “healthy pills” may be making them sick. The consumer magazine identified 12 ingredients in readily available dietary supplements that should be avoided because they have been linked to serious cardiovascular, liver and kidney problems. These dietary supplements aren’t regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and thus manufacturers of these products don’t have to provide evidence that they are safe and effective.

Mineral supplement produces industrial strength bleach

ak440 high 100x100Consumers should not take the oral mineral supplement Miracle Mineral Solution because when used as directed, it produces an industrial bleach that can cause serious health problems. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued the warning after receiving several reports of injuries from consumers who had used the product, including severe nausea, vomiting, and life-threatening low blood pressure from dehydration. Consumers are advised to shop using the solution immediately and throw it away.

CPSC names Chinese companies responsible for toxic drywall

walls 100x100The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission has identified the manufacturers of the Chinese drywall that thousands of homeowners say has ruined their homes and their health. Enough toxic drywall to build 30,000 homes entered U.S. ports from China during the post-Katrina building boom of 2006 and 2007. People in as many as 18 states claim that the drywall has sickened them with a slew of respiratory problems while corroding their homes’ electrical wiring, air conditioning units, and other household systems.

FDA warns consumers against using ear candles

ear candle 100x100Burning ear candles that manufacturers claim draw ear wax and “impurities” or “toxins” out of the ear canal should not be used because they may cause serious even if used according to manufacturers’ instructions, according to a warning from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Ear candles are hollow cones about 10 inches long and made from a fabric tube soaked in beeswax, paraffin or a mixture of the two. In ear candling, also called ear coning or thermal auricular therapy, a patient lies on his side while a candle is placed in the outer ear and lit.

Transportation secretary says people should stop driving recalled Toyotas
