CPSC issues mandatory safety standards on infant, baby walkers

images2 99x100The Consumer Product Commission (CPSC) has zeroed in on infant/baby walkers as part of its ongoing effort to provide mandatory standards on a range of infant and toddler products.

Infant/baby walkers are an enclosed framework on casters or wheels designed to help babies learn to walk. The new standards adopt the voluntary industry standard and include using the actual weight of a walker in calculation to determine the launching distance for the “stair fall” test, specifying equipment used in the “stair fall” test, and adding a parking brake test for walkers equipped with parking brakes.

CPSC names Chinese companies responsible for toxic drywall

walls 100x100The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission has identified the manufacturers of the Chinese drywall that thousands of homeowners say has ruined their homes and their health. Enough toxic drywall to build 30,000 homes entered U.S. ports from China during the post-Katrina building boom of 2006 and 2007. People in as many as 18 states claim that the drywall has sickened them with a slew of respiratory problems while corroding their homes’ electrical wiring, air conditioning units, and other household systems.

CPSC announces federal safety standards on infant bath seats

images1 83x100Infant bath seats are now required by law to meet a list of standards in an effort to reduce the number of preventable deaths and incidents involving the bath seats. The U.S. Consumer Product Commission (CPSC) announced this week that it has approved the first mandatory standard on a range of infant and toddler products as required under the Consumer Product Improvement Act (CPSIA).

CPSC offers tips on how to safely hold infants in sling-type carriers

baby sling do and dontMany moms who have toted their tots in baby slings swear by them, but the recent of baby slings by the Consumer Product Commission (CPSC) has cast a dark shadow on the popular parenting accessory. The CPSC announced last week that it is investigating at least 14 deaths associated with the sling-style infant carriers because they pose two different types of suffocation hazards to babies. Those at greater risk of or death include babies younger than 4 months, low birth weight twins, premature infants, and babies with breathing issues such as a cold.

Graco strollers recalled due to amputation, laceration hazard

10115c 100x100Another popular brand of strollers are being recalled by the manufacturer due to the risk of children’s fingertips being amputated or lacerated, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Commission (CPSC). Graco Children’s Products Inc., of Atlanta, Ga., is recalling about 1.5 million strollers because the stroller’s canopy hinge mechanism can amputate or lacerate children’s fingertips while the canopy is being opened or closed. To date, Graco has received reports of five fingertip amputations and two fingertip lacerations. The involves Graco Passage, Alano, and Spree strollers and travel systems. Chinese manufacturers substitute toxic cadmium for lead

china jewelryEarlier this month, the Associated Press exposed yet another disturbing Chinese trade secret when it reported that some manufacturers in China are making children’s jewelry with the highly toxic metal cadmium. Children’s jewelry now joins the growing list of dangerous and sometimes deadly products pouring into the United States from China – a list that includes toys covered with lead paint, pet food and baby formula tainted with melamine, sulfuric drywall that has ruined thousands of homes, and other poorly made or defective merchandise.

Wal-Mart, CPSC act to foil use of cadmium in children’s products

wm 100x100Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., the world’s largest retailer, is pulling items of children’s jewelry known or suspected to be manufactured with high levels of toxic cadmium from store shelves. The move follows an Associated Press investigation published earlier this week which found some China-based manufacturers were creating children’s jewelry with varying amounts of cadmium — a heavy medal considered by the federal government to be one of the most toxic substances on earth.
