Car crash injuries cost $99 billion-plus per year in U.S.

car wreckA study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found the annual cost of medical care and productivity losses associated with motor vehicle crash injuries exceeds $99 billion per year in the United States, with direct medical care accounting for $17 billion. Despite great improvements in traffic in recent years, the costs related to traffic accidents amount to about $500 per licensed driver in the U.S.

Motorists must use extra caution around heavy commercial trucks

trucks 100x100According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 37,261 fatal crashes occurred on U.S. roads and interstates in 2008, the agency’s last complete statistical year. These accidents killed more than 42,000 people — the equivalent of more than 16 average-size passenger airplanes every month or 200 every year. Many of these crashes are the result of driver behavior (two-thirds of all traffic fatalities may be caused by aggressive driving behaviors) or a lack of awareness about various hidden dangers present on the roads every day, such as the unique and often deadly dynamic between passenger cars and heavy commercial trucks.

Anemia treatment adds more precautions to black box warning

Iron dextran 90x100Reports of anaphylactic-type reactions, including fatalities, following the administration of Dexferrum (iron dextran injection, USP) used to treat anemia or “iron-poor” blood in people who are unable to take oral iron medication, has spurred American Regent, Inc., makers of the drug, to modify the medicine’s black box warning, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to issue a warning to hematological health care professionals and hospital risk managers.
