To date, Graco has received reports of five fingertip amputations and two fingertip lacerations. The recall involves Graco Passage, Alano, and Spree strollers and travel systems. For a list of Model numbers affected by the recall, visit Beasley Allen Recalls.

Graco’s stroller recall comes just two months after Maclaren USA announced it was recalling about one million of its Maclaren Strollers for the same reason. At the time of the recall, Maclaren had received 12 reports of fingertip amputation.

Graco manufactured the recalled strollers with two different hinge mechanisms. Only strollers or travel systems with a plastic, jointed hinge mechanism that has indented canopy positioning notches are included in this recall. The recalled strollers were manufactured between October 2004 and February 2008. The model number and manufacture date are located on the lower inside portion of the rear frame, just above the rear wheels.

The strollers were sold between October 2004 and December 2009 at numerous retail stores nationwide, including AAFES, Burlington Coat Factory, Babies “R” Us, Toys “R” Us, Kmart, Fred Meyer, Meijers, Navy Exchange, Sears, Target, and Walmart. The strollers sell for between $80 and $90, and the travel systems sell for between $150 and $200.

Consumers with Graco strollers that fall under the recall should immediately stop using them and contact Graco to receive a free protective cover repair kit. Consumers can contact Graco between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday at (800) 345-4109, or on their Web site at www.gracobaby.com.

Graco has made a video Safety Announcement showing how to attach the hinge covers. View it here:

At the time of the recall, Maclaren had received 15 reports of children placing their fingers in the stroller’s hinge mechanism, which resulted in 12 reports of fingertip amputations in the United States.

The CSPC is urging consumers with the strollers to immediately stop using them and contact Maclaren to receive a free repair kit designed to remedy the situation. News of the recall had parents in Maverick Park Slope reacting at light speed. The Maclaren stroller, it turns out, is by far the most popular stroller in the neighborhood.

“This is an alarmist neighborhood, so people are going to be anti-Maclaren until they fix the problem,” said Dara Kass, a mother of two, to the New York Times. She said she had received numerous calls from friends and family frantically warning her about the recall.

Kass says the stroller issue is just as big a health concern to her and her friends as the swine flu. But some residents said they thought the worries were overblown, adding they probably wouldn’t even register for the protective device to prevent amputation.

“You do wonder sometimes, are we being overly worried?” says Jessica Carey. “But having a baby, I know literally anything can go wrong.”

Maclaren USA can be reached at (877) 688-2326 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or online at www.maclaren.us/recall.
