Gas explosion at Calif. business kills one, severely burns another

Investigators suspect somebody within the business tampered with the gas lines Thursday after the gas service was shut off for nonpayment.

Plant explosion earns New Hampshire manufacturers hefty OSHA fines

welder 100x100The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited two New Hampshire companies for violating workplace standards after a January 23 explosion rocked a plant in Nashua. Combined penalties against the two employers — Worthen Industries Inc., a manufacturer of glues and adhesives, and S.L. Chasse Welding & Fabrication Inc., a steel erection contractor, amount to $257,500.

DuPont receives multiple OSHA penalties after fatal gas leak

chemical plantThe Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has cited DuPont $43,000 for subjecting its employees to toxic chemicals after a fatal workplace incident in January at the company’s Belle, West Virginia, plant. OSHA launched its investigation in January after a plant worker was exposed to fatal levels of phosgene, a colorless gas that was used as a chemical weapon in World War I.

Sugar company to pay $6 million in penalties after deadly plant blast

imperial sugar 100x100A Georgia sugar company will pay more than $6 million in penalties for the February 2008 explosion at its Port Wentworth, Georgia, plant and subsequent health and violations discovered at the company’s other facility in Gramercy, Louisiana. The explosion at Imperial Sugar Co. claimed the lives of 14 workers and seriously injured dozens of others.

OSHA establishes new website to support whistleblowers

osha whistleThe U.S. Occupational and Health Administration unveiled a new website this week dedicated to providing would-be whistleblowers with encouragement and protection. According to OSHA, “workers who ‘blow the whistle’ on prohibited or unlawful practices in the workplace or report and health discrimination play an important role” in keeping employers in line with federal laws.

Falling concrete from Milwaukee garage kills 15-year-old boy

mil wisconsinA 15-year-old boy was killed and two others injured when a 30-foot concrete panel detached from a parking garage and fell in Milwaukee, Wisconsin yesterday afternoon. The incident occurred just after 4 p.m. at a garage located underneath a park across from the Milwaukee Museum of Art. Officials say that the decorative concrete slab fell from the garage’s façade onto a road leading out of the structure.

Freon leak eyed as culprit in Eastdale mall employee death

eastdale mall ice rinkEastdale Mall in Montgomery, Alabama, reopened last night at 6 p.m. after inspectors found it posed no risk to the general public. The mall closed on Sunday after the body of 22-year-old employee Nicholas Burdette was found in the bathroom near the mall’s skating rink. Some mall employees and others familiar with the mall’s facilities believe that Burdette was killed by a Freon leak around the Ice Palace skating rink that allegedly has made others sick in the past.

Massive salmonella outbreak linked to 47 Illinois Subway restaurants

salmonella outbreakPublic health officials investigating the outbreak of an uncommon strain of salmonella that swept through Illinois from May to June announced they have linked the bacteria to 47 Subway franchise stores in the state. Illinois Department of Health officials say they have confirmed 97 cases of Salmonella Hvittingfoss infection across 28 Illinois counties.
