Death, illnesses trigger ground beef recall

ground beefMore than a half million pounds of ground beef have been recalled by the manufacturer after one person died and others were sickened after consuming the meat, which was possibly contaminated with E.coli. The recall was initiated by Fairbanks Farms and includes ground beef, meatloaf and meatball mix with the sell-by dates from September 19-28 and sold under brands such as Trader Joe’s Butcher Shop Fine Quality Meats, Giant Meatloaf & Meatball Mix, and BJ’s Lean Ground Beef, contains 7 percent fat.

Judge upholds verdict favoring families hurt by massive gas leak

tanker fuelingA Circuit Court Judge in Maryland has upheld the verdict of a jury that awarded $150 million to the residents of a Baltimore County community living in proximity to a service station owned by Exxon Mobil Corp. In 2006, an underground pipe at the station leaked 26,000 gallons of gasoline, the equivalent of four tankers full, into the surrounding land. The leak occurred over a five week period and resulted in massive environmental damage.

Black & Decker re-issues trimmer-edger recall

B&D weedeater2Black & Decker, Inc. of Towson, Maryland, and the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission have re-announced a recall of approximately 200,000 defective Grasshog XP Trimmer/Edgers (weed whackers, weed eaters) due to the risk of laceration and burn hazards they pose.
