car wreckA study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found the annual cost of medical care and productivity losses associated with motor vehicle crash injuries exceeds $99 billion per year in the United States, with direct medical care accounting for $17 billion. Despite great improvements in traffic in recent years, the costs related to traffic accidents amount to about $500 per licensed driver in the U.S.

OSHA fines Sea World for safety violations after orca trainer’s death

Gas explosion at Calif. business kills one, severely burns another

Investigators suspect somebody within the business tampered with the gas lines Thursday after the gas service was shut off for nonpayment.

Plant explosion earns New Hampshire manufacturers hefty OSHA fines

Combined penalties against the two employers — Worthen Industries Inc., a manufacturer of glues and adhesives, and S.L. Chasse Welding & Fabrication Inc., a steel erection contractor, amount to $257,500.

In U.S. commercial fishing, Gulf Coast shrimpers have highest death rate

shrimp 100x100In an analysis of commercial fishing deaths from 2000 to 2009, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found Gulf of Mexico shrimping to be the deadliest form of commercial fishing in the United States. Commercial fishing in general is one of the most dangerous industries for workers, with a fatality rate of 128 per 100,000 — 32 times higher than the rate for all other workers.

DuPont receives multiple OSHA penalties after fatal gas leak

chemical plantThe Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has cited DuPont $43,000 for subjecting its employees to toxic chemicals after a fatal workplace incident in January at the company’s Belle, West Virginia, plant. OSHA launched its investigation in January after a plant worker was exposed to fatal levels of phosgene, a colorless gas that was used as a chemical weapon in World War I.

Sugar company to pay $6 million in penalties after deadly plant blast

imperial sugar 100x100A Georgia sugar company will pay more than $6 million in penalties for the February 2008 explosion at its Port Wentworth, Georgia, plant and subsequent health and violations discovered at the company’s other facility in Gramercy, Louisiana. The explosion at Imperial Sugar Co. claimed the lives of 14 workers and seriously injured dozens of others.
