OSHA hits U.S. Postal Service with hefty fines for endangering workers

usps 100x100The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has cited the U.S. Postal Service for workplace violations involving electrical hazards found at a Pittsburgh mail processing facility. OSHA proposed penalties of $299,500 for the violations.

Apple co-founder Wozniak and others find trouble with Prius

toyota logoMany Toyota Prius owners continue to experience sporadic episodes of sudden, unintended acceleration while driving their cars, even without floor mats jamming the throttle wide open or the gas pedal sticking. Toyota included all 2004-2009 Prius models in the floor mat entrapment recall it announced last fall, but did not include the Prius in its subsequent recall of Toyotas for sticking accelerator pedals.

Record settlement awarded to man who lost both legs on the job

cat track loader 100x100A 50-year-old Pennsylvania man, described by the Philadelphia Daily News as a “Softhearted ex-Marine” and father of two, recently settled a negligence mid-trial against his employer and Caterpillar, Inc., the manufacturer of industrial construction equipment, for $16.25 million. Scott Skirpan of Easton, Penn., lost both of his legs at the Northampton County landfill in a grisly accident in May 2006. Skirpan’s injuries were so horrific that he died twice before being resuscitated.

EEOC files age discrimination suit against Philadelphia company

Frank Bruno tried not to answer when asked during a job interview for human resources director at Unitek USA L.L.C., “How old are you, 78?” The 51-year-old man had worked 25 years in human resources at director, corporate director and vice president levels. He knew the question crossed a line. Yet, he was a shoo-in for the job, or so top management had alluded. He just needed to sit through one last interview with the company’s major investor, Joseph Kestenbaum. And Kestenbaum was persistent about knowing how old Bruno was.
