FAA fines show companies routinely ignore hazmat shipping regulations

hazmat signThe Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been cracking down on shipments of hazardous materials and has published a notice of civil penalties issued against 11 companies. The FAA issued the fines in response to improperly packaged, marked, classed, described, or labeled hazardous materials. The penalties total $720,000 and range from $54,000 to $91,000.

Whitco stadium lights may fall, pose risk of serious injury or death

10295c 100x100The U.S. Consumer Product Commission (CPSC) is reminding the public, school officials, facilities managers, and municipal and public officials with Whitco Company LP stadium light poles to have them inspected by a qualified engineer immediately because these 70- to 135-foot, 1- to 4-ton poles can fracture or crack and fall over, posing a risk of serious or death to patrons and bystanders from being hit or crushed. The poles could put hundreds of people at risk if they fall toward a crowded stadium or onto a building.

In U.S. commercial fishing, Gulf Coast shrimpers have highest death rate

shrimp 100x100In an analysis of commercial fishing deaths from 2000 to 2009, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found Gulf of Mexico shrimping to be the deadliest form of commercial fishing in the United States. Commercial fishing in general is one of the most dangerous industries for workers, with a fatality rate of 128 per 100,000 — 32 times higher than the rate for all other workers.

Construction accident kills two and injures two near Dallas

denton railTwo construction workers were killed and two seriously injured last Thursday morning in a work site accident in Lewisville, Texas about 20 miles north of Dallas. According to initial reports, 34-year-old Gerardo Horta of Dallas and Rafael Ruiz-Garcia, 41, of Denton were killed when the boom of a cement truck collapsed, striking them and the other workers.

After 8 industrial worker deaths in 4 months, OSHA vows to do more

OSHA logoDeputy Assistant Secretary Jordan Barab of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued a warning to the petrochemical and energy industries today, prompted by the deaths of 58 workers in just the last four months. Eleven of those deaths occurred when the Deepwater Horizon oil platform exploded in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20.

Oil rig explosion in Gulf leaves 11 missing, 4 critically injured

burning oil rigCoast Guard personnel continued to search the waters of the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday, following an oil rig explosion late Wednesday that sent nearly 100 workers fleeing from the burning rig, and left 11 missing. Many survivors had to dive from the rig’s platform, 75 feet in the air, to the ocean below to escape the flames. Seventeen workers were injured, four critically. The platform continues to burn, and to list into the sea, as firefighters work to control the blaze that is being fueled by raw crude oil from the rig’s well.

Hyperbaric chamber therapy may help heal brain injuries

marine 100x100Traumatic brain injures, called TBI for short, have been named as the “signature ” of war veterans returning home from duty in Afghanistan and Iraq. Now medical researchers are planning to launch a study that will test the effectiveness of hyperbaric chambers in treating veterans with brain injuries.
